Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)

The IRS issues ITINs to individuals who need a U.S. tax identification number but aren't eligible for a Social Security number — allowing both resident and nonresident aliens to comply with U.S. tax law.

Who needs an ITIN

Anyone with a federal filing obligation but no SSN.

Nonresident Aliens

Filing a U.S. tax return without SSN eligibility.

Resident Aliens

Based on days present in the U.S. under the substantial presence test.

Dependents & Spouses

Of U.S. citizens or resident aliens.

Visa Holders

Nonresident visa holders with a U.S. filing requirement.

Treaty Benefit Claimants

Those claiming benefits under a U.S. tax treaty.

Good to know

What an ITIN does — and doesn't — do.

Renewal

ITINs expire after three consecutive years without use on a federal return — renew early to avoid delays.

No Work Authorization

An ITIN doesn't authorize employment, provide Social Security eligibility, or qualify dependents for the earned income credit.

Filing Threshold

A return is required once net self-employment earnings reach $400 or more.
